Gaming in 4K (even if it’s not generally native 4K) may well be so revelatory that PS4 Pro will cement itself in the memory of those who get to experience it.

If I had a 4K TV perhaps I’d be feeling rather different. I’m sure Sony wanted to avoid a situation that would make people believe the original PS4 is being left behind, getting sloppy down-ports, but the Pro has nothing to call its own. I just can’t see myself looking back at the PS4 Pro’s launch and reminiscing about the line-up, as it’s been stolen from elsewhere. Maybe it’s just me maybe most people are perfectly happy with better versions of some top quality games maybe mid-generation refreshes are always going to be like this. That might be unrealistic, but it would have given fans and Sony something to point to as the showcase games for the new console. To show what the Pro can do I’d have liked one or more games, probably from Sony itself, designed for the Pro and then downgraded to run on the PS4.

While Sony has been keen to point out that there won’t be any exclusive PS4 Pro titles, so far we’re getting PS4 games that have been enhanced for PS4 Pro. On PS4 Pro I don’t think there is such a game. The quality of those games is obviously all over the place, but they all offered an obvious visual improvement over what we had before. The PS1 had Ridge Racer, the Nintendo 64 had Super Mario 64, the Dreamcast had Sonic Adventure, the Xbox 360 had PGR3, the PS4 had Killzone: Shadow Fall, and the Xbox One had… Ryse. Of course, this isn’t a normal console launch, with these games being enhanced for PS4 Pro rather than being exclusively made for it, and therein lies the problem: there doesn’t appear to be a title that we can all point to and go: “That there is what the PS4 Pro is capable of.” It’s kind of what is expected from at least one game at launch.

Three Call of Duty titles, Battlefield 1, FIFA 17, Mafia III, NBA 2K17, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Skyrim, Titanfall 2, Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted 4, XCOM 2, and more come together for a first wave of titles that hands down beat any other console launch in history.

There aren’t really any surprises in the launch line-up, but there are a lot of excellent or high profile releases. It feels good to finally have something solid to work with, yet despite part of me eagerly anticipating my pre-order being delivered next week I’m still not near maximum hype. At launch on November 10 there will be around 40 games that support the new, more powerful PS4 – more will be coming before the end of the year. After what has felt like an eternity of nothingness when it comes to PS4 Pro information, Sony finally lifted the lid today.
